SUMMIT COUNTY —Pent-up demand, growing consumer confidence and a strong U.S. dollar may help fuel a resurgence of U.S. tourists traveling to Europe, according to a report from the World Tourism Organization.

Despite updated projections that the U.S. economy will only grow by about 1.7 percent next year, international tourism officials said outbound U.S. tourism to Europe is expected to return to pre-2008 levels by 2014. (more…)

SUMMIT COUNTY — The world’s tourism economy continued to rebound during the first four months of 2011, with international tourist arrivals increasing globally by 4.5 percent over the previous year.

Travelers flocked to South America and Europe as the global economy continues to rebound, but stayed away from the Middle East and North Africa, where tourism visits dropped significantly.

According to the latest issue of the UN’s World Tourism Barometer, all regions other than the Middle East showed growth during the period. Some areas saw double-digit growth, including South America, up 17 percent, and South Asia (including India), up 14 percent. Click here to read the WTO’s annual report for 2010. (more…)

Global tourism busting pre-recession records

Global tourism has rebounded past pre-recession levels thanks in part to a strong economic recovery in Asia and a continuing tourism boom in emerging economies.

2010 numbers show tourism is helping global economic recovery

SUMMIT COUNTY — Global tourism has bounced back to pre-recession levels, with total international tourist arrivals totaling 642 million from January to August 2010 (the latest figures available), 40 million (7percent) more than during the same period in 2009, and 1 million more than during the record 2008 tourism year.

Based on those numbers, the World Tourism Organization expects the 2010 total to climb about 5 or 6 percent above 2009, with more moderate growth of about 4 percent expected in 2011. Emerging economies continued to lead the way, growing through August at a rate of 8 percent, compared with 5 percent for advanced economies. (more…)
