Morning photo: Weekend warmup

Hot stuff!

Nothing says hot summer day like a dragonfly.

FRISCO —After a chilly start, it ended up being a rather nice week, with some balmy afternoons, considering it’s mid-January. But I still decided it was time for a little break from all the snow, ice and frost pics, so I went back through the archives for warm weather scenes for this weekend warmup photo essay.

Summer starts …

FRISCO — June was a brutal month in some parts of Colorado, with wildfires blazing on the Front Range and the realization that the state was going into the worst drought since 2002. But in the high country, it’s always one of the driest months of the year, and summer-like temperatures made for pleasant days, though local officials were on razor’s edge over the potential for a serious wildfire. All eyes were on the weather maps in hopes of an early monsoon, while trees and plants started to dry out, or in some cases, never really green up. But summer is summer, life goes on and nature is resilient. (more…)

A whisper of autumn …

Geese on Dillon Reservoir.

SUMMIT COUNTY —If Memorial Day is the start of summer, than Labor Day is the bookend at the other end of the season. And with some coolish, rainy weather, and sun that just doesn’t want to climb that high into the sky anymore, it definitely feels like the seasons are changing gear. I’m hesitant to call it the end of summer; I prefer to think of it as the start of autumn. In any case, it was a lovely day to spend some time outside, so I bookended my day with an early stroll in the woods of the Gore Range and an evening walk with Leigh and the dogs along Dillon Reservoir. Here’s how it looked.

First of September.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy …

Summer starts with the solstice, the longest day of the year, photographed at Loveland Pass, Colorado, 11,999 feet above the sea.

SUMMIT COUNTY — Mid-July is definitely the height of the summer season pretty much anywhere in the northern hemisphere, so when #FriFotos host and founder @EpsteinTravels announced this week’s theme for the popular Twitter chat, I zipped through the archives to find a few shots from this summer, as well as year’s past. And as much as I love cold powder snow and skiing, there’s something to be said for being able to go outside without putting on multiple layers, hats, gloves … you know what I mean, right? Join in the fun by uploading pics to Twitter and tagging them with #FriFotos.

The Tiki Bar at the Dillon Marina is definitely a good place to celebrate the summer season.

Vote for your favorite July picture in the poll

Overlooking Dillon Reservoir from Tenderfoot Mountain through the branches of an ancient Douglas Fir. Bright sun still on the hillside, while the backdrop recedes into a cloudy shadow.

SUMMIT COUNTY — Today we’re looking at images taken around the county in July, the peak of the summer season. It’s a time for hiking, picnics and, of course wildflowers. I chose the pictures from the archives for the quality of the light, trying to show how the play of sun and shadows can affect the mood of a photo. Please vote for your favorite in the poll at the end and we’ll put the winning photo in our 2012 calendar. (more…)

Photo essay: Summer!

Scenes from along the great American road

A summery scene at the beach on Cap San Blas, Florida.

ON THE ROAD — Summer solstice, the official start of summer, has always been interesting to me, because even as the calendar turns, the days actually start to get shorter. Regardless, it’s a great time to post a few pictures that evoke warmth, vacations and sunshine. (more…)
