Long-term monitoring could help establish population trends, with global warming seen as prime threat to high country ecosystems

SUMMIT COUNTY — Colorado conservation groups will once again send citizen scientists into the field this summer to track pikas, and this year, the effort will get a financial boost from Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of Groupon.

The goal of the Front Range Pika Project, organized by Rocky Mountain Wild, is to cover a lot of territory and establish the presence or absence of pikas in high altitude meadows and boulder fields. In the long-term, the information may help wildlife biologists determine whether populations are declining in response to global warming.

The Front Range Pika Project campaign will launch on the Denver Groupons Grassroots page May 28 and run through Sunday, June 2, with 100 percent of the Groupon Grassroots campaign proceeds will be used to provide training and field supplies for Front Range Pika Project volunteers. (more…)
