Grooming under way at Breckenridge and Frisco Nordic centers; early bird pass sales end Oct. 31, and gear swaps are coming up soon

By Bob Berwyn

SUMMIT COUNTY — The juicy storm that rolled through Colorado set up the big resorts for a great opening day, and also is helping local crosscountry ski areas prepare for what could be an early start. Already, the Breckenridge Nordic Center is taking reservations for lessons and rentals.

Some of the trails have been groomed, but for now, there is only some limited skiing available at no charge in the immediate vicinity of the the lodge and shop, according to a voice message on the center’s answering machine. From the message, it also sounds like some grooming is under way on Peak 7 trails and at the Frisco Nordic Center.

If you want to be ready, get your season pass now. Early bird rates (15 percent off) end Oct. 31. The early bird  adult pass for a Frisco or Breckenridge-only pass is $200. A joint pass for Frisco, Breckenridge and Gold Run is $255. Click here for all the pass prices and instructions for buying your pass online. Continue reading

Gold Run operation up for bid, deadline March 19

By Bob Berwyn

SUMMIT COUNTY — If you’ve ever dreamed of running a cross-country ski area, now’s your chance to lease the 472-acre Gold Run Nordic Center in Breckenridge. The town is looking for qualified bidders to submit proposals by March 19 and take over operations next season. The proposal should include information on how to operate Gold Run Nordic Center, including ideas on how to handle trail design, grooming and programming.

An information packet  for potential bidders shows that the center’s revenue has increased steadily since it opened about five years ago. Total revenue during the 2004-2005 season was about $78,000. In the 2008-2009 season it climbed to $141,000. Similarly, use of the 27K-trail system has also doubled in that time, from 4,303 visitors in 2004-2005 to 8,880 visitors last season. Continue reading
