Global warming to shift global wildfire patterns

North America, Europe likely to see increased blazes

SUMMIT COUNTY — A new global-scale study shows wildfires are likely to become more frequent and intense across much of North America and Europe in coming decades, while more rainfall in equatorial regions may suppress fires.

The study confirms what other research has already suggested, but it’s significant because it’s based extensive satellite data that enables a comparison between regions and points toward long-term trends that can be distinguished from year-to-year variations, said co-author Katharine Hayhoe, Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University.
