Candlelight ceremonies marked the one-year anniversary of the Haiti earthquake

Editor’s note: Rotarian Deborah Hage, of Summit County Rotary, District 5450, Colorado, visited Haiti with Jim and Nancy Gulley for the first anniversary of the earthquake in Port au Prince.

I needed closure for the traumatic events of the quake and its aftermath and also wanted to see what state the area was in.

My normal work is in Jeremie, a port town on the southern tip of the island that was not directly affected by the quake. My donor partners, significantly Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church, and I have been working to create livable conditions at Good Samaritan Home for seniors, elderly men and women abandoned on the street through www.jeremierelief.org.

We also support work in a medical clinic, orphanage and school run by the Methodist Church of Haiti.  I did not go to Jeremie on this trip, however, as I wanted to get answers to what has been accomplished in Haiti in the last year and what still needs to be done.
