New snow, high winds combined to increase the risk of snowslides

SUMMIT COUNTY — Copious amounts of new snow and high winds in Colorado’s north-central mountains have combined to push the avalanche danger into the red zone once again. An avalanche warning in effect for the Steamboat zone and and avalanche watch for the Summit Vail zone, along with a continued high-wind warning through Thursday morning.

The Steamboat area has seen between 3 and 4 feet of snow in the past week, and high winds have built extensive windslabs on north to east to south aspects, where both triggered and natural slides are likely the next few days. Some of the avalanches will be large and destructive. Under the warning, travel is not recommended in avalanche terrain. (more…)

Summit County records top wind speed in state — again

Winds of 80 mph were widespread across mountains and Front Range

Here is surface pressure analysis (light blue lines) and infrared satellite image at 12 PM MST near the height of the windstorm. Note the large difference in pressure between the surface low pressure over southeast Nebraska and high pressure centered over southern Idaho, and the resulting tight gradient across Colorado. This is a key feature in windstorms across the Front Range and High Plains.

SUMMIT COUNTY — Similar to a mid-November wind storm, Summit County once again recorded the strongest winds in the state during the recent New Year’s Eve storm, with a weather station near Frisco measuring a peak gust of 126 mph early on New Year’s Eve day.

The storm killed one person in Boulder who was struck by a falling tree limb, blew trucks off the road, slowed chairlifts at high country ski areas and caused power outages for about 19,000 people in Colorado. (more…)
