Veteran lawmaker from Gunnison County wants to be a nonpartisan voice in the State Legislature

By Bob Berwyn

SUMMIT COUNTY — Summit County’s plurality of unaffiliated voters could make history this year if they band together to vote for Kathleen Curry, a Gunnison County resident considering a run for the Colorado House of Representatives as an independent candidate.

Curry, a veteran of the State Legislature, would  compete for the seat in the newly formed House District 61. She would face incumbent Democrat Millie Hamner and either Deb Irvine or David Justice, currently contesting a Republican primary.

Curry is currently in the process of gathering the required 400 signatures and will be in Summit County this week to meet with local business and community leaders to test the waters for the bid. (more…)

Breck’s Emily Tracy will battle for State Senate seat

Breckenridge resident Emily Tracy says she will run for Colorado Senate District 8.

Republicans hold an edge in voter registration in the new district

By Bob Berwyn

SUMMIT COUNTY — Breckenridge Democrat Emily Tracy has a tough battle ahead in her bid to represent the newly shaped Colorado Senate District 8, where Republicans hold an edge in voter registration.

Tracy said the outcome could depend on how the national presidential race goes. A high turnout of motivated Democrats in the population centers of the district would help her cause.

The new district is comprised of Summit, Garfield, Routt, Grand, Jackson, Rio Blanco and Moffat counties. Tracy will face either incumbent Sen. Jean White, who represents a big chunk of the new district in its existing configuration, or  Randy Baumgardner, a self-described conservative Republican who currently represents House District 57. White and Baumgardner will contest a Republican primary this summer. (more…)

Colorado: Reapportionment goes to Supreme Court

Oral arguments to stream live on the web

By Summit Voice

SUMMIT COUNTY — A new map of Colorado Senate and House districts will be decided by the Colorado Supreme Court, which will listen to oral arguments this week. The session is set for Wednesday, Nov. 9, and the arguments will be streamed live on the web via several links, including the Colorado Supreme Court website and the Colorado General Assembly website.

The new legislative maps created by the Colorado Reapportionment Commission have been challenged by 11 different entities on constitutional grounds, including Jefferson, Douglas and Araphoe counties.

According to Clearthebenchcolorado.org, many of the challenges from around the state cropped up after a brand new set of maps was introduced by the commission’s only unaffiliated member, chairman Mario Carrera.

Carrera’s maps were the one adopted, after earlier versions were subjected to several rounds of public review and comment. All the maps are online here.

Here are the statements of opposition as filed with the Colorado Supreme Court.

Republicans to face-off in August primary; Leonard gets big chunk of money from gun-owners lobby, Hurlbert backed by Hasan family

By Bob Berwyn

SUMMIT COUNTY — Campaign finance reports filed in early May show that, so far, Republican Tim Leonard leads all candidates in fundraising in the race for State Senate District 16, covering parts of the Front range in Boulder and Jefferson counties, as well as big chunks of the high country in Grand, Summit, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties.

State Republicans have targeted the district as a key part of their strategy to win back a majority in the State Senate. They see the seat, being vacated by Dan Gibbs, as an opportunity to win back a slot without having to face an incumbent candidate.

Democrats have had firm control of the seat recently, mainly because of a huge advantage in Boulder County, where Dan Gibbs won the 2008 race by nearly 7,000 votes. In that race, Republican candidate Don Ytterberg narrowly won in Grand and Jefferson counties. Gibbs, a Silverthorne resident, also dominated the race in Summit County, winning 10,504 votes to Ytterberg’s 3,574.

Without that native-son advantage, the Democrats could be facing a much closer race in Summit this coming November. The Democratic candidate for the seat is Jeanne Nicholson, a Gilpin County commissioner, who is not facing a primary contest. (more…)
