Morning photo: Gone fishin’

It’s not always about what you catch …

Boy and dog, keeping cool on a summer day at Trent Park, one of several stocked ponds at neighborhood parks in Summit County, Colorado.

SUMMIT COUNTY — Wow! The many fishing pics in the archives made me realize how much quality time I spent with my son last summer alongside local ponds, reservoirs and streams. Often, Kellen came along, which worked out really well, giving me a chance to work wirelessly, as in the photo above, while the boys caught supper — or not. Enjoy the photoblog from some of our favorite Colorado fishing holes and take your kids outside and fishing this summer. It’s one of the few things I’ve found that can compete with the attractive nuisance of video games. (more…)

Morning photo: Summit skies, part 2

Fire in the sky

On this summer evening I was in the middle of cooking dinner when the sky lit up without much warning. With several pots bubbling on the stove, I didn't have time to walk down to the wetlands or drive to prime viewing spot, so I just went on our southeast facing porch tried to get an angle that showed the height of this dissipating thundercloud. Since we live in a sort industrial/commercial'residential interface zone, the view from this spot includes part of Xcel's Frisco substation, parts of the old medical center property and corners of some other semi-industrial properties, but that didn't take anything away from this celestial display. The only post-processing here was a crop to square the image so it displays better in the WordPress format. Because of the vertical layout of the blog, square works better than the traditional aspect ratio. It kind of makes me nostalgic for one of the old square format film cameras!

SUMMIT COUNTY — The summer season was full of spectacular sunsets and sunrises this year, especially as monsoon moisture worked its way into the area. Click to see a few of my favorites. (more…)

Morning photo: Clinton Gulch Reservoir

Summer Sunset in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado

Sunset light reflects abstractly on the surface of Clinton Gulch Reservoir, in Summit County, Colorado, between Copper Mountain and Leadville, along Highway 91.

SUMMIT COUNTY — A Summit County fishing safari with a couple of pre-teen boys ended at Clinton Gulch Reservoir without yielding any of the sought-after cutthroat trout, but with a spectacular sunset. Please see the short slideshow at the end of this post for a few more scenes from the reservoir. MORE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM CLINTON GULCH AND THE HIGH COUNTRY AFTER THE BREAK … (more…)
