SUMMIT COUNTY — It’s about 5:30 p.m. on a sunny late summer day, and people from around the county are streaming into the Silverthorne Elks Lodge for the free community dinner, a weekly event organized by the local Rotary Club since 2009.

Some youngsters ride up on skateboards and bicycles; other folks arrive in dented sedans, piled high with sleeping bags and pillows and few even stroll over from nearby neighborhoods to sample roast pork, sauteed greens from a local community garden and a huge salad of mixed greens.

“The cupcakes are awesome, and I really love it when they make spaghetti,” said local teen Michael Sandoval, who’s enjoying the dinner with his mom, who said she’s enjoying the break from cooking.

The community dinner recently served its 30,000th dinner, but the weekly meal isn’t the only philanthropic effort by Summit Rotarians. Each year, the organization disburses about thousands of dollars to support the local community care clinic and for scholarships and literacy. (more…)
