Early November is an in-between time in the high country, and along with snow-covered pumpkins, many ski town residents enjoy visiting ski swaps. Far from simply being fundraisers for local junior ski teams and other worthy causes, these swaps are a hallowed autumn ritual and a chance to find that ever-elusive ski treasure that you never even knew you needed.

Just think — you can add to an almost endless collection of ski-related items that fills multiple bins and threatens to avalanche out of the closet at the end of the hall every time you open the door. Hey, you never know when you might need that miscellaneous single ski pole basket or an old-school CB windbreaker with a busted zipper. Sure, you could go high-tech to an online swap, but shopping live is also a fascinating exercise in people-watching.

The first customers are the “specialists.” They line up at the door hours before opening and they’ll be looking for a spare lens to replace the cracked one in their 1980s-era Uvex bubble goggles, for tiny springs to repair their vintage 1969 Look Nevadas or Marker explo-da-mats and for that padded Spyder racing sweater they always wanted in high school but couldn’t afford. Summit County: Get your early bird X-C pass now

Pre-season pass discounts end Oct. 31; Breckenridge Nordic Center plans Nov. 11 opening, and popular Nordic swaps coming up in early November

SUMMIT COUNTY — With significant snowfall forecast down to the valley floors this week, local crosscountry skiers are no doubt also starting to think about the upcoming season. The Breckenridge Nordic Center has set an opening date of Nov. 11 and the Frisco Nordic Center will open a week later, Nov. 18, conditions permitting.

If you want to hit the trails as soon as they open, now’s the time to get your season pass at the early bird rate, with the 15 percent discount available through Oct. 31.

The popular Nordic ski swap is also coming up, first at the Breckenridge Nordic Center Nov. 11 -13, then at the Frisco Nordic Center the following weekend. Passes can also be bought online.

If the login page appears, click Create New Account.

2. Fill out New Account Request Form

Required fields have asterisks. When complete, click Submit at the bottom right of the page.

3. Check your Personal Email Account for a Confirmation

To activate your account, click on the link in the email. Clicking this link will redirect you to the site where you can login and begin registering for programs.

How to Purchase a Pass Online

1. Click Membership on the left side of the following link – http://activenet8.active.com/breckenridgerec/

If the login page appears, click Passes at the top right of the page.

2. Choose a Pass

Search for the pass you want to purchase and click on the title (blue and underlined).

3. Click Add to My Cart

Log in to your account with your Customer ID and password. Choose the member and confirm pass details. Choose Continue at the bottom of each page.

4. Payment

Finally, enter your credit card information on the Payment Information page. After clicking Continue you’re finished!

4. Early Bird Passes will be mailed to you the first week in November.

SUMMIT COUNTY – Don’t hang up those skinny skis just yet — the Nordic ski centers in Summit County are still enjoying great conditions, and more snow is in the forecast.

Individuals or teams can choose from a variety of events this Saturday at the Breckenridge Nordic Center — a 60 km, 30 km or 12 km skate or classic ski, or a 3k snowshoe loop and a double track loop for visually impaired skiers. Proceeds from registration and sponsorships will benefit the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center.

Frisco Nordic Center: Ready, set … skate!

SUMMIT COUNTY — January’s near-record snowfalls have set up near optimal conditions not only for downhill skiing and riding at lift-served areas, but also for local cross-country ski areas, where the season is also in high gear, with all trails open and a slew of events and races coming up.

This weekend features Frisco Cup racing at the Frisco Nordic Center, with 16K and 32K skate and classic races on what promises to be a bluebird day. Wax could be the key, as the forecast is predicting highs to soar up near 40 degrees.

If you’re not in racing form yet, consider joining the Level II skate skiing clinic series at the Frisco Nordic Center, beginning Feb. 7 and continuing for three subsequent Mondays, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Contact the Frisco Nordic Center at (970) 668-0866 to see if there are still some spots open for the clinics.

You can learn to unravel some of the mysteries of Nordic waxing for skate skiing at Feb. 5 one-hour clinic, which might help if you’re planning on participating in the Big Enchilada of Summit County Nordic events, the Feb. 6 Frisco Gold Rush, billed as Colorado’s oldest cross-country and snowshoe event and benefiting the Summit Nordic Ski Club.

Gold Rush racing begins at 9 a.m. with 5K and 10K classic races, followed by 5K and 10 skate races at 9:45 a.m. and the 20K skate at 10:30 a.m. Snowshoe racers hit the course at 11:30 a.m. for the 7K TUBBS snowshoe contest. Click here to register online.

SUMMIT COUNTY — With all the hoopla at local alpine resorts, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the fact that Summit County also has world-class cross-country skiing in Frisco and Breckenridge, where both Nordic centers have opened for the season.

Frisco has 12K of skating track open, and the center hopes to set a classic track in time for the weekend.
This weekend also marks the ski swap at the Frisco Nordic Center, with proceeds benefitting the Summit Nordic Ski Team. The swap features new and used cross-country and telemark gear, as well as accessories. The swap runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The swap will also be accepting items for sale throughout the weekend.

The Breckenridge Nordic Center is reporting 12K of trails open for both classic and skate skiing. A daily trail pass is $14.Get more information on both Nordic Centers here.

SUMMIT COUNTY — The juicy storm that rolled through Colorado set up the big resorts for a great opening day, and also is helping local crosscountry ski areas prepare for what could be an early start. Already, the Breckenridge Nordic Center is taking reservations for lessons and rentals.

Some of the trails have been groomed, but for now, there is only some limited skiing available at no charge in the immediate vicinity of the the lodge and shop, according to a voice message on the center’s answering machine. From the message, it also sounds like some grooming is under way on Peak 7 trails and at the Frisco Nordic Center.

If you want to be ready, get your season pass now. Early bird rates (15 percent off) end Oct. 31. The early bird  adult pass for a Frisco or Breckenridge-only pass is $200.
