VIDEO: Breckenridge pays homage to Ullr

Wackiness prevails at the 49th annual Ullr Fest Parade

Story and video by Jenney Coberly

BRECKENRIDGE, CO — Summit County could use Ullr’s help right about now, and locals and visitors alike did their best to encourage him to send some snowfall this way.

On a clear and very cold late afternoon, spectators lined Main Street to enjoy the annual spectacle. Some young Broncos fans entertained the crowd by ‘Tebowing’ their way along the parade route.

The parade was followed by a bonfire in the south gondola parking lot.

Week in Review: Top stories and headlines

A story quoting White River NF supervisor as saying that the local fire danger from beetle-killed trees may have peaked was one of the most-viewed stories last week.

Lots of video and forest health coverage last week, along with global warming and Gulf oil spill news

SUMMIT COUNTY — We started the week by reporting on a new initiative from the Summit Prevention Alliance to build public and institutional support for new rules on tobacco retailing, including distance restrictions from schools, as well as age limits for clerks and licensing of tobacco retailers. The organization says there is research showing local kids can easily buy tobacco products. Get the details here: Summit County: New tobacco rules eyed.

That same day, the shooting in Arizona dominated the news. Since there was plenty of breaking information available on all channels, Summit Voice took a look at the way so-called new media was handling the story, and at first blush, it didn’t look good. Even major sources like CNN and NPR mis-reported the early facts, obviously focusing on speed rather than accuracy in their efforts to draw viewers, listeners and readers.
