Monday moonrise in Summit County, Colorado.

FRISCO —The longest nights of the year are upon us, and it’s not surprising that we decorate our homes and yards with bright lights, as if to banish the darkness. Even at 10 a.m. the sun casts long shadows, painting snow drifts with pale blue light. Maybe that’s why I was so eager to try and get a picture of the December full moon rising last night — this time of year, the lunar orb almost (but not quite) seems to outshine the sun.
