Morning photo: December light

Alpenglow warms the peaks of the Continental Divide in early December.

FRISCO — Short days and long winter nights prevail in the mountains of Colorado, and as a photographer, I feel a little squeezed. The window for shooting is compressed into just a few hours, between 7 a.m. and about 4 p.m. and sometimes it feels like the sun drops behind the western horizon before I even have a chance to adjust my camera settings. But there’s no question that, if you manage to be in the right time at the right place, December light is exquisite, painting the snow with warm tones that help banish the cold blue winter shadows at least for a few minutes.
