Arrival of Winter: Snow covered trees and Orion high in the sky are
sure signs that Winter has arrived in Summit County, Colorado.

“It all started last July when the John Fielder’s Colorado Facebook page ran a contest for best summer photo,” McVey said. “I sent in a photo I did called Milky Way over White River National Forest. My image was voted into the Top 3 from which the Gallery Staff at the Denver Photo Art Gallery chose my image to be the top photo.

“I was really excited to win this contest and I entered it so that the gallery might notice me, but after the contest there was no contact … for almost 8 weeks. The gallery staff then notified me via email that they loved my photos and would like me to come down to the gallery and do an interview,” McVey said. “I was shocked and excited but unsure about my commercial appeal and had to put my money where my mouth was, so to say.”

“This was an investment for me and the big question was would people want a photo of the Milky Way in their living room or over their bed?” he continued. “The answer has turned out to be yes, but I really thought that I may be taking a loss for 6 months then returning to obscurity.”

His nightscape photos of Summit County, Colorado have appeared in India’s First
Astrophotography Festival at the Nehru Planetarium, NASA’s Space.Com, Earthsky.Org, ScientificAmerican.Com. They’ve also been featured in publications like MTN Town Magazine and the Summit County Citizens Voice.
