Earn your moonlit turns, and a schnitzel dinner!
By Bob Berwyn
SUMMIT COUNTY — There’s an old saying among backcountry skiers about earning your turns, and this week (Saturday, Nov. 24), freeheel and alpine touring enthusiasts (along with snowshoers) will have a chance to earn a great meal along with those turns, as Arapahoe Basin’s moonlight dinner series returns.
The first edition in this winter’s series is themed “A Night in Bavaria,” featuring grilled German sausages and mixed cheeses, creamy potato soup as first courses. Entrées include a classic Wienerschnitzel (which is actually Austrian and not Bavarian; but why quibble when schnitzel is involved) as well as braised pheasant or North Atlantic cod. See the full menu here.
The randonee dinner is not a lift-served event, which means access to the Black Mountain Lodge, halfway up the hill, is via skis or snowshoes. Uphill access is between 6:30 and 7 p.m., with hors d’oeuvres at 6:45 p.m. The dinner wraps up with a moonlit trip back to the base area at 9:30 p.m.
Uphill enthusiasts may also want to check out A-Basin’s rise-n-shine rando race series, set for Dec. 4, Dec. 18, Jan. 8 and Jan. 22.
The popular moonlight dinner series continues with the already sold-out New Years Eve dinner, a Spanish-themed night on Jan. 26, a night in France on Feb. 23, a Scandinavian theme on March 23 and wrapping up with a night in Italy on Feb. 20.
