Morning photo: Happy Birthday, Ansel Adams!

Some black-and-white love …

Dillon Reservoir and the Tenmile Range.

SUMMIT COUNTY —It was Ansel Adam’s birthday yesterday, so I doodle around with a few images in iPhoto — which isn’t a bad little desktop program — to try and recreate some full-tone black and white images. It seems a bit counter-intuitive to take rich full-color images and strip away the bright blues, oranges and greens, but it’s always instructive. What I’ve found is that you can’t really make a good black and white version unless the color original is properly exposed, with good contrast and and a full range of hues. Sometimes I try to think in black and white, even when photographing a colorful scene. It’s like I have one of those old-school hand-held light meters inside my brain.

If you like what you see, don’t be shy. All Summit Voice images are for sale as fine-art prints and there’s more at our online galleries at Imagekind and RedBubble.

I don't know that Ansel Adams did a lot of macro work, but I've always felt that frost crystals lend themselves well to de-saturation.

Full moon rising over the Continental Divide.

Reflected cloudscape.

The pattern of ice and snow attracted by eye, and my camera's attention in this shot taken from near the Dillon Amphitheater.

Ice and stones.

A wide-angle view of the same scene.

Frozen wave: Shooting straight down at the surface of the Snake River, near Keystone Colorado.

Before the snows.

Moonlight.

Frozen mists.

  1. Interesting photos Bob. I wonder, I read about a new camera I think by Nikon D800/D800E, that has 36 mp I believe. I wonder, how this camera might shoot in the same photo[s] without using the method you used?

  2. nice effort, bob. like the first image the best. i have a very decent 11 x 14 reproduction of “Moonrise” on the wall between my tall speakers down in the man cave. can look at it for hours.
have you ever seen/read AA’s book “Examples”? in his words-the making of about 40 of his most outstanding images. the story behind “Moonrise” is astounding. i have it if you want to borrow…
