Illegal grow operation uncovered at a Bemrose Trail residence

SUMMIT COUNTY —Sheriff’s officers this week arrested 38-year-old Matthew Shumsky for marijuana cultivation and possession of more than twelve ounces of marijuana, after the Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to an anonymous complaint regarding the cultivation of marijuana at 16 Bemrose Trail.
Shumsky was arrested late Monday night and released after posting a $7,500 bond.
Sheriff’s Office deputies reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana during their initial contact with Shumsky. A subsequent search warrant conducted on Shumsky’s residence uncovered three firearms, hydroponic equipment being used to cultivate marijuana, and a total of 16.58 ounces of marijuana and approximately 120 marijuana plants. Street value for the processed marijuana was estimated at $5,800; the plants were estimated to be worth approximately $600,000.
Sheriff John Minor praised the efforts of the investigations team.
“They did a fine job in wrapping this up so quickly after we received the tip. Hopefully this will serve as a lesson to others that non-medical marijuana cultivation is still a crime and will not be tolerated in Summit County,” Minor said.
Shumsky was charged with possession of more than 12 ounces of marijuana, a class 4 felony, and marijuana cultivation, a class 6 felony. A class 4 felony carries penalties of up to 6 years in jail and up to a $500,000 fine; a class 6 felony is punishable by up to 1½ years in jail and up to a $100,000 fine.

A tip, they say. Probably from someone who wanted a free sample, or perhaps one who was afforded credit but reneged on paying. All sorts of scenarios pop up in “TIPS”.
Or maybe someone that lives in the subdivision that got tired of all the traffic coming and going.
