Plenty of fresh snow for skiers, some roads closed, avalanche warning in the backcountry
By Summit Voice
SUMMIT COUNTY — A wet Pacific storm delivered widespread snow across the entire state, with many ski areas reporting more than a foot of snow, including 17 inches at Crested Butte, 16 inches at Telluride and six to 10 inches at the resorts along the I-70 corridor. The storm, expected all day Saturday, dug a little farther south than anticipated and slowed down, with the heaviest snowfall arriving in the north-central mountains early Sunday morning. A backcountry avalanche warning is in effect for most mountain areas.
CDOT reported heavy westbound skier traffic on I-70 Sunday morning, and many mountain passes were closed for avalanche control work or due to adverse weather conditions, including Loveland Pass, Highway 285 Fairplay to Kenosha Pass and Red Mountain Pass. More info at www.cotrip.org.
Snowfall should decrease throughout the day, though many mountain areas could pick up several more inches. A winter storm warming is in effect through 12 p.m.
Monday looks to be warmer and drier, with a shortwave ridge passing aloft. The next storm system is forecast to split, with most storm energy rolling through Wyoming and Arizona and New Mexico.
Midweek looks to be fair and warm, with models anticipating another Pacific storm late in the week.
