SUMMIT COUNTY —Summer-like September weather transitioned quickly to typical October skies, with early snowstorms blanketing the peaks with a promising coat of white. In between, fine days invited to one more fishing or skateboarding session, not to mention the last few games of the Summit Strikers soccer season. And as icing on the cake, several ski areas managed to open the first half of the month.

And sure enough, opening day came a few days later.

November: Opening day at Copper Mountain.

November is the month of frost in Summit County, when feathery surface hoar grows along lakes ans streams.

Picabo Street visited Copper to help open the U.S. Ski Team speed training center.

December started with a spectacular sundog over Dillon Reservoir.

U.S. Grand Prix halfpipe action at Copper Mountain.

The last full moon of 2011 rises over Dillon Reservoir and the Continental Divide.
