The state of Colorado is taking applications for trails grants.

Last year more about $1.7 million was awarded to build and maintain recreational trails

SUMMIT COUNTY — Applications for the 2012 Recreational Trails Grants are now available online for local, county and state governments, federal agencies, recreation and metro districts and non-profit organizations that are involved in maintaining Colorado’s diverse system of trails or planning and building new routes.

Funding for the Recreational Trails Program comes from Great Outdoors Colorado, the Colorado Lottery, the U.S. Department of Interior’s Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Federal Highway Administration.

The 2011-2012 grant application is available at www.parks.state.co.us/Trails/Grants/.  Applications must be received by Colorado State Parks by Nov. 1, 2011 at 5 p.m. The address is Colorado State Parks, State Trails Program, 13787 S. Hwy 85, Littleton, Colo., 80125. The process for gaining approval for funds is the same as last year.

The funding available for this grant program is contingent upon the funding levels provided by these offices and agencies. Last year, 18 grants totaling more than $1.7 million were awarded to applicants through this program.

“The program has awarded trails grants for 27 years and helped create a world-class, statewide network of trails enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors each year,’ said Nancy Matchett, state trails coordinator. “These trails are also a legacy that generations will appreciate.”

Eligible trail projects include: new trail or trailhead construction; maintenance, reroute or reconstruction of existing trails; enhancements or upgrades to existing trailheads; land acquisition or easements; and planning and support.

“We believe that this efficient and user-friendly process will help create more trails for Coloradans and visitors to the state to better enjoy our awe-inspiring scenery and wealth of natural beauty,” said Thomas Morrissey, State Trails Program Manager.

The applications will be reviewed by the nine-member Colorado State Trails Advisory Committee. The committee includes a member from each of the state’s seven Congressional Districts, one person appointed by Colorado State Parks Board as an at-large member and a representative from the GOCO Board of Directors

The applications that are approved by the Colorado State Trails Committee will then be sent to the State Parks Board and to the GOCO Board of Directors for a final decision.
