SUMMIT COUNTY — Just in time for summer’s last hurrah, Denver Water and Summit County will re-open Dillon Dam Road, with nightly closures (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) remaining in effect until the work is done.

The important local connection between Frisco and Dillon has been closed since Aug. 1 during construction of new security features and other projects. Continued construction on the security enhancements will continue into October.

The objectives of the project are to improve the security and safety of the dam for Summit County residents, visitors and Denver Water, as well as allow vehicles to access the road 24 hours a day. The project includes realignment of the roadway to accommodate traffic roundabouts, lighting improvements and installation of entry stations at each end of the dam.

A Dillon Dam Security Task Force, including Denver Water, Summit County Government and the towns of Dillon, Silverthorne and Frisco, worked together to come up with plan that would enable the road to re-open 24-7.

The following is an update of work to date:

The Dillon Dam Security Task Force work to enhance security measures on Dillon Dam Road/County Road 7 began the week of July 11. Although the paving work on the east side is complete, work at both ends of the dam will continue Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Traffic controls will be present and drivers should expect intermittent traffic stops for construction vehicles. Delays are expected to be minimal. The work to finalize the security measures is expected to be completed by the end of October.

Work on the Old Dillon Reservoir expansion project will continue on the hillside above a portion of the road through Friday, Sept. 9, which will require alternating one-lane traffic closures. Brief, intermittent stops or delays should be expected.

In addition to the security measures and reservoir expansion, Summit County has completed the resurfacing of a portion of Dillon Dam Road/County Road 7, and significant improvements to the adjacent recreational path (rec path). These improvements will enhance the experience and improve the safety of the rec path users and motorists.
