Campaign targets action at  COP 17 in Durban

By Summit Voice

SUMMIT COUNTY — A new initiative launched in Germany this week aims to harness the power of social media, and Facebook in particular, to show world leaders that citizens of the world want action, and not just words, on climate change.

The Climate Vote Project website went live Aug. 15, steering people toward a Facebook page, where organizers are hoping get 10 million “Likes” by the time government ministers assemble in Durban, South Africa in late November for the COP 17 UN climate conference.

The goal of the conference is to set the course for the conclusion of a legally binding climate protection treaty to take effect in 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol expires. The U.S. and Chinese governments are key targets for the organizers.

“Climate change is continuing immediately and rapidly. Despite various efforts on the part of industrial nations, world-wide CO2 emissions have not decreased; on the contrary. In 2010, worldwide CO2 emissions hit a new record. That is why we are demanding that governments, especially the leading industrial countries, conclude and implement, as quickly as possible, more substantial and advanced measures towards CO2 reduction”, said Sven Lilienström, spokesperson for the Climate Vote Project.

The organization says that, to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius, industrialized nations must commit themselves to far more drastic reductions in emissions than in the first Kyoto period. And this time, the new agreement must include the United States of America, which signed the first Kyoto Protocol but did not ratify it.

Finally, to encourage India and China to take part with appropriate targets for Kyoto Phase Two, developed countries need to achieve demonstrable progress in the absolute reduction of their greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. Pitty Failbook doesn’t have a ‘dislike’…

  2. 10 million they say? Considering that they now insist on real identities to play, what a boon to the Government to know who the various players are. As the news of the day shows, both here in the U.S. & in Europe, the social media are being used for separating out the so called wheat from the chaff.

  3. This is what we need an mass movement to bring about the needed action of this crisis of our own making. The fossil fuel corporations have been successful in their doubt campaign to continue their dirty business for the short term.
For those still in the undecided camp, read Dr. James Hansen’s book, “Storms of My Grandchildren”. You will no longer be in doubt of the danger we are creating.
Thank you so much for this news.
