Reservoirs and lakes offer good fishing while stream flows remain high

SUMMIT COUNTY —While high flows have dampened the fishing in many high country streams, anglers are reporting good catches from area lakes.
Vail Pass could be a hot spot after the Eagle River Water & Sanitation District recently stocked Black Lakes with 5,000 pounds of catchable-size rainbow trout in the past few weeks
This past week, the District coordinated the second stocking of 2,500 pounds of 10-16 inch long rainbow trout into the two Black Lakes. The first 2,500 pounds of trout were stocked on June 21. The fishery supplying the trout says the 5,000 pounds equates to about 2,000 fish.
The trout are raised by a Boulder based fishery that is licensed and health inspected by the Colorado Department of Agriculture and the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW). The DOW annually tests the fishery’s trout to assure each lot is healthy and free of disease.
The District stocks the lakes annually with “catchable rainbow trout” under the terms of a 1986 agreement with the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. The two cold water reservoirs are operated as part of the water supply system developed by the District, which serves the Town of Vail and by contract, the communities of EagleVail through Cordillera.
At various times of the year, the District releases water from the two lakes which flows down Black Gore Creek and into Gore Creek, which runs throughout the Town of Vail. The released water augments Gore Creek streamflows and can be used per District water rights. The Colorado DOW partners with the District to operate Black Lake 2 in support of fishing, wildlife habitat, and recreation.
Both lakes are visible from Interstate 70, sitting to the west of Vail Pass at an elevation of 10,500 feet, and are easily accessed by the public. Black Lake No. 1 covers about 27 acres and has a capacity of 527 acre-feet of water, nearly 172 million gallons, while Black Lake No. 2 covers about 9 acres and has a capacity of 98 acre-feet of water, nearly 32 million gallons. About two-thirds of the 5,000 pounds of rainbow trout were stocked in Black Lake 1 with the remaining fish stocking Black Lake 2.
Information on fishing licenses and fees is available from the DOW at http://wildlife.state.co.us/Fishing/. For information about District operations, go to www.erwsd.org or call 970-476-7480.
