Three weeks, 6,000 miles and 15 states

English tea roses bloom at a rest area along I-25 in northern Colorado. The roses were brought to the area by settlers trying to civilize the wild reaches of the West.
SUMMIT COUNTY — Sorting through hundreds of pictures from a trip is never easy, and our recent swing through the upper Midwest, down the Mississippi and along the Gulf Coast was full of sensational moments, from fireflies flashing in the muggy Missouri dusk, to stunning sunsets in the Louisiana bayous.

The Chugwater Diner claims to be oldest in Wyoming and serves up some of the best milkshakes on either side of the Continental Divide.

The best breakfast was this plate of biscuits and gravy at the pet-friendly Fountain Inn motel in Newcastle, Wyoming.

In New Orleans, we listened to a rousing rendition of "You Are My Sunshine" while nibbling beignets at the Cafe du Monde.
