U.N. designation to help create awareness of forest issues
SUMMIT COUNTY — The International Year of Forests designation by the UN may help to raise awareness about some the serious environmental issues facing forests around the world. Here are a few forest images to show what’s at stake.

Aspen groves contrast with dark lodgepole pine forests along the road leading to the Meadow Creek trailhead.

So many of Colorado's birds depend on forest habitat that it's hard to imagine what it will look like when all the lodgepoles are dead.

Mountain pine beetles have even started isolated attacks against high elevation five-needles pines like the ancient bristlecones.
