During the fall and winter, visit Colorado State Parks for outdoor recreation adventures under the moonlight. Hike, cross-country ski or snowshoe under the glow of the moon and enjoy a different experience at Colorado State Parks. Hear the call of the wild, see wildlife tracks and experience the serene beauty of Colorado’s great landscapes, illuminated by the moon.
Roxborough State Park will host a full moon hike on Friday, Oct. 22 beginning at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Friends of Roxborough, and reservations are required. Barr Lake State Park hosts full moon hikes throughout the year, including a Halloween Eve Night Hike on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Visitors can explore what goes bump in the night on this hour-long hike, and sip on hot cider in the Nature Center afterward. For more information, call (303) 659-6005.
At the end of January, Yampa River State Park hosts its annual Ski and Skate event, where visitors can cross-country ski on the 1.25-mile snow-covered nature, illuminated by luminaries. The frozen pond allows guests to ice skate by moonlight, and then warm up with free refreshments around the campfire. There is also a small sledding hill for toddlers and young children to enjoy a safe thrill. For details, call (970) 276-2061 closer to the event.
In February, State Forest State Park hosts an annual full moon open house, which begins with a showcase of art and continues into the night with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing under the full moon. Guests can finish the evening with a potluck at the Moose Visitor Center and hot cocoa and cookies at the Chocolate Cabin. For more information, call the park at (970) 723-8366.
